Urban landscaping and environmental requalification
We are an urban planning and landscaping firm dedicated to restoring degraded areas and building sustainable landscapes.
We work on multiple scales and fronts: from landscape design to master planning, from tree planting guidelines to public policies.
We also promote cultural and educational activities, such as botanical expeditions, urban walks, and applied research—always connecting city, nature, and community.
OUR HISTORY
Mata Urbana was created by Luciano Goulart in 2020 as an online platform dedicated to disseminating knowledge about native species in the city and mobilizing communities to plant these species in obsolete and degraded areas of the urban fabric. We have conducted several planting and maintenance campaigns in various regions of Belo Horizonte, always focusing on Cerrado and Atlantic Forest species.

In 2022, Mata became an extension project at the UFMG School of Architecture, linked to the TRAMA Urban Design Laboratory. By 2025, we had organized several more community outreach projects, lectures, and scientific articles, and strengthened our social engagement with other planting collectives operating in the city. We also expanded our network of institutional partnerships, becoming members of the Belo Horizonte City Hall's Environmental Observatory.
Institute
Starting in 2025, the project was restructured into Instituto Mata Urbana, a socio-environmental impact company dedicated to the ecological regeneration of urban environments. We work on reforesting cities with native species through integrated landscape and urban planning projects, environmental consulting, and guidelines for sustainable landscaping.
Our work promotes nature-based solutions to address the challenges of urbanization, reconciling environmental recovery, quality of life, and the appreciation of public spaces.

OUR MISSION

Transforming cities into agents of conservation and restoration of native vegetation through urban and landscape projects that break with monotony and generate new ecosystems in urban environments. We work to rehabilitate degraded areas, enrich biodiversity, and build more resilient, sustainable, and dynamic urban spaces. Our mission is to integrate forests into everyday urban life, contributing to healthier, more inclusive, and environmentally responsible cities.
